International Certification- ASCPi
ASCP is moving forward with International Certification through ASCPi.
In January of 2006, the Globalization Taskforce and Board of Governors
approved a new set of harmonized eligibility routes that will be used
for every country approved for international certification. Additionally,
chemistry and phlebotomy committees have met to form international versions
of the Chemistry (C) and Phlebotomy (PBT) examinations. These new examination
categories should be available to the international community by January
of 2007.
After much research and planning, ASCP representatives Dr. E. Blair
Holladay, Executive Director/Vice President, and Ms. Jennifer Williams,
International Certifications Manager, traveled to Hong Kong, the Philippines
and Singapore to promote International Certification through ASCPi.
New Globalization Taskforce members have been appointed and have formed
an International Certification Committee in their respective countries
to aid with the establishment of ASCPi. New Globalization Taskforce
members are as follows: |
Hong Kong: Chris Wong, PhD., FIBMS, CBiol, MIBiol,
Vice Academic Secretary, Hong Kong Institute of Medical Laboratory
Sciences (HKIMLS)
- ASCP representatives were able to tour three separate laboratories
to establish a complete understanding of the medical laboratory profession
in Hong Kong. Dr. Holladay and Ms. Williams visited Queen Mary Hospital,
a university hospital; Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a major public hospital;
and the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, a private hospital. Several
meetings were sponsored by Hong Kong University and HKIMLS. Meetings
with Professor Yip Shea Ping at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University
provided insight regarding the main program for medical technologists
in Hong Kong while meetings with Y.L. Tsim, Vice President of HKIMLS,
allowed ASCP to discuss the collaboration between our two organizations
to best establish ASCPi. The Hong Kong trip concluded with
a productive meeting held with all members of the appointed Hong Kong
International Certification Committee at the Alumni Chamber of the
University of Hong Kong.

Philippines: Agnes B. Medenilla, BSMT, MS, MT(ASCP),
President, Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET)
- Upon arrival in the Philippines, Dr. Holladay and Ms. Williams presented
a formal introduction to the process of International Certification
to the Philippine International Certification Committee. This presentation
was sponsored by Roche (Philippines) Inc. The committee discussed
the logistics by which ASCP could realize its goals in the Philippines.
The following meeting, sponsored by Abbott Diagnostics and United Laboratories,
allowed ASCP representatives to interact with over 50 chief Medical
Technologists, Deans of schools conducting medical technology programs,
the Board of Directors of The Philippine Association of Medical Technologists,
Inc. (PAMET) and the Board of Directors of The Philippine Association
of Schools of Medical Technology/Public Health, Inc. (PASMETH). ASCP
representatives and members of the Philippine International Certification
committee later held an orientation to promote ASCPi to
over 200 medical technology students in the Philippines.

Singapore: Eddie Han San Ang, PhD., President,
Singapore Association of Medical Laboratory Science (SAMLS)
- Meetings began in Singapore with visits to three of the Polytechnic
schools that offer diploma programs in medical technology. After meeting
with ASCP Globalization Taskforce member, Eddie Ang, ASCP delegates
visited Tamasek Polytechnic. Dr. Vijaya Seevaratnam of Tamasek Polytechnic
provided Dr. Holladay and Ms. Williams with an introduction to Tamasek
facilities and the medical technology course structure. This meeting
was followed by a meeting with Adrian Yeo of Singapore Polytechnic.
Singaporean medical technology diploma courses consist of 3 years of
training including a clinical internship. The final school visited
was Ngee Ann Polytechnic. At Ngee Ann, ASCP representatives gave an
overview of International Certification through ASCPi.
Dr. Holladay and Ms. Williams completed their promotion of ASCPi in
Singapore with a final meeting and tour at Singapore’s National University
Hospital.

These taskforce members have established their own committees
to provide necessary details on clinical laboratory programs in their
country, media and advertising suggestions, and course curriculums/descriptions.
Each international globalization taskforce member arranged two full days
of meetings with their established international committees, various
government officials, program directors, deans and students.
ASCP appreciates the positive response received from international representatives
and students. These meetings would not have been possible without the
new Globalization Taskforce representatives and the generosity shown by
the various institutions. New developments in International Certification
will be posted as they are made on the international section of the ASCP
website: http://www.ascp.org/Certification/CertifyingExaminations/international/
