MRSA: This is the Pandemic - Novel Problems and New Solutions 11/09/2007
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is now endemic in many United States hospitals. The increasing incidence of disease across the United States demonstrates we are in the midst of an epidemic from this pathogen. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demonstrated that by 2005 there were more deaths related to invasive MRSA disease than from HIV-AIDS. Colonization with MRSA is associated with eventual infection that has high medical care cost and poor clinical outcome. With an increased burden of in-hospital MRSA disease, and the emerging concern that community-associated (CA)-MRSA continues to increase, medical professionals and the public are urgently seeking means to limit the spread of this organism. Join your colleagues and register for this ASCP Hot Topic Teleconference on December 3. |

2007 ASCP Annual Meeting Attendees Leave New Orleans Richer for the Experience 11/02/2007
Heart and Science of Pathology on Full Display
ASCP brought more than 1,000 people to New Orleans and raised $13,000 to assist residents without health care during the 2007 ASCP Annual Meeting Oct. 18-21. Eight pillars of the pathology and laboratory medicine community received ASCP’s new Master Awards, and two pathologists from Tanzania were on hand as the first recipients of complementary ASCP memberships for pathologists in resource-poor nations. Nobel Laureate J. Robin Warren, MD, offered a fascinating account of his discovery of Helicobacter pylori and the opposition he encountered from the scientific community along the way. But the highlight of this year’s event undoubtedly was the gripping account by Gregory Henderson, MD, PhD, FASCP, of his experience treating people in the New Orleans Convention Center after Hurricane Katrina.

ASCP's Newest Book: Blood Cells, An Atlas of Morphology 10/12/2007
Blood cells come in different sizes and shapes in health and in disease. The degree of such a variation in health is relatively small but it may become significantly larger in certain conditions. To be successful in practice of hematology, be it in a classroom, laboratory, clinician's office, outpatient clinic, or an inpatient unit of a hospital, it is important for every practitioner to be familiar with the characteristics and clinical relevance of individual normal and abnormal cells and with the morphologic findings associated with various clinical conditions.
