The ASCP Board of Registry (BOR) was founded in 1928 by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, Inc. (ASCP) only six years after the Society was founded in 1922. The BOR is a separate certifying body within the organizational structure of the ASCP.

To date, over 420,000 individuals have been certified by the BOR that is recognized as the preeminent certifying agency for clinical laboratory personnel. In March 2007, the Board of Registry was awarded accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for the Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification programs. ANSI has created a benchmark of excellence in U.S. voluntary standardization and conformity assessment systems since 1918.

The mission of the Board of Registry is to promote the health and safety of the public by certifying competent laboratory professionals and maintaining a roster of certificants.

The goals to fulfill this mission are:
  • Certify the competency of laboratory personnel

  • Set the standard for quality examination development and administration

  • Assist educational programs in the evaluation of their effectiveness

  • Perform research on careers within the medical laboratory and develop methods of competent evaluation

  • Provide study materials for examination preparation

  • Provide resources for career recruitment

  • Maintain a roster of certified individuals
