Assessment: February 11-16, 2007
During the week of February 11 – 16, 2007, ASCP conducted site visits of various laboratories in the public health system as well as privately funded laboratories to gain firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by laboratory professionals in Guyana. In addition to laboratory visits, the ASCP met with stakeholders, visited the University of Guyana, and planned and customized ASCP curriculum to be used in Guyana.

Training of Trainers (TOT): May 28 – June 6, 2007
In collaboration with CDC-Guyana, FXB and the Ministry of Health-Guyana, ASCP conducted an 8 day Training of Trainers (TOT) in Georgetown, Guyana, May 28 – June 6, 2007. The focus subjects were Clinical Chemistry and Hematology. The main objectives of the TOT were for the participants to learn and understand the training content and to become more comfortable with presenting the material. All of the TOT participants will be expected to conduct trainings in their respective regions subsequent to the completion of the TOT.

Twenty TOT participants (10 in Haematology and 10 in Chemistry) took part in subject-specific training and participated in “Teach-back Methodology.”

The first week of training consisted of extensive didactic lecture during the morning sessions, and hands-on instrument training during the afternoons. The second week of training focused on providing the participants an opportunity to practice their teaching skills. The didactic sessions were facilitated by ASCP consultants: Bette Jamieson, M.Ed, MT (ASCP) SH, Amy McGranahan, MT (ASCP), Wendy Arneson MS, MT(ASCP), and Anna Murphy, MT(ASCP). Kaitlin Sandhaus and Shannon Heard provided ASCP staff support and training coordination.
